As healthcare continues to evolve, so too must the way we educate future clinicians. By embedding virtual care into medical education, Charles Sturt University is preparing students to deliver high-quality care in the communities that need it most.
This partnership isn’t simply about introducing new technology into the classroom. It’s about helping validate scalable, evidence-based models of virtual care that can improve healthcare access for rural, regional and remote Australians while preparing the next generation of clinicians to deliver that care.
Preparing clinicians for the realities of rural healthcare
People living in rural, regional and remote Australia continue to face significant barriers to accessing healthcare. Workforce shortages, long travel distances, limited specialist availability and growing demand mean traditional models of care are no longer enough.
Virtual care has become an essential part of addressing these challenges, allowing clinicians to assess, monitor and support patients without requiring them to travel hundreds of kilometres for routine appointments.
This is accelerating the shift toward a hybrid model of care, where in-person and virtual services are combined to extend the reach of the clinical workforce and ensure patients receive the right care, at the right time, in the right setting.
However, for virtual care to reach its full potential, tomorrow’s clinicians need to be confident using these models from the very beginning of their careers.
Embedding virtual care training into medical education
Through this collaboration, Charles Sturt University will integrate Visionflex technology into its medical training programs, giving students practical experience with virtual consultations and digitally enabled models of care.
Rather than learning about telehealth as an emerging concept, students will develop hands-on experience delivering care in environments that closely reflect the realities of rural practice.
This equips future doctors with the skills to:
- Deliver safe, patient-centred care across distance.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams using digital health technologies.
- Support patients who may have limited access to face-to-face healthcare.
- Understand how virtual care can complement traditional clinical practice.
